How to use this tool
1. Enter the future balance you want, how much you have already saved, and your nominal annual interest assumption. Use 0% for a plan without interest.
2. Choose the time available in whole years or months and whether deposits happen at the beginning or end of each month.
3. Calculate the regular monthly contribution, rounded up to a cent. Review the projected balance and monthly CSV, then change the term or target to compare another plan.
Working backwards from a goal
The calculator projects growth of your starting balance, subtracts it from your goal, and divides the remaining amount by the accumulated value of monthly deposits. Beginning-of-month deposits have one extra month of growth. At 0%, the gap between the goal and the starting balance is divided evenly over the number of months.
Worked example
To reach 12,000 in 24 months with 3,000 already saved and 0% interest, you need (12,000 − 3,000) ÷ 24 = 375 each month. The final balance consists of your 3,000 start plus 9,000 in monthly contributions.
Questions and assumptions
Why is the result rounded up?
Monthly contributions are rounded upward to the next cent so the projected balance meets the goal under the selected assumptions. The final projected balance can therefore be slightly higher. Interest is retained at full precision during the savings projection; displayed amounts are rounded to cents.
What if I already have enough?
If the starting balance is projected to reach your goal by the end of the period without more deposits, the monthly contribution is 0. This does not promise the assumed rate will continue. Use 0% to check a plan that does not depend on interest.
Goal and projection limits
Starting balances are limited to 10 million and goals to 100 million. A plan needing more than 1 million per month or producing a balance above 1 trillion is rejected. Increasing the time period or reducing the target may make the monthly amount more practical.
What does this estimate leave out?
This is an illustration, not a quote or financial advice. It assumes a fixed nominal annual rate divided by 12 and monthly compounding. It excludes fees, tax, inflation, rate changes and currency conversion. Actual products can use daily interest, different rounding and eligibility conditions. Check the terms of your account or loan; the tool does not assess affordability or recommend a product.
Supported inputs
Choose AUD, USD, GBP, EUR, CAD or NZD as a display label; this does not convert values. Enter amounts without commas or currency signs, with up to two decimal places. Use a rate from 0% to 60% and a term of 1–600 whole months or 1–50 whole years. Negative rates and withdrawals are outside this model.
