How to use this tool
1. Enter your gross salary, hourly rate or regular pay amount, then choose its pay frequency. For an hourly rate, enter your paid hours per week.
2. Choose whether super is included in the amount. Select the financial year and add a HECS-HELP or other study loan if it applies.
3. Calculate, then switch between weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual take-home pay. Use Print / save PDF to keep your inputs and breakdown.
How is take-home pay calculated?
Take-home pay is gross cash salary minus estimated income tax, Medicare levy and any study loan repayment. The calculator first converts your pay to an annual amount and separates employer super from an inclusive package. It applies the selected year's tax brackets and low income tax offset, then divides the annual result by 52, 26 or 12 for weekly, fortnightly or monthly averages. Super remains separate from cash you can spend.
Worked example and rate review
For 2026–27, an $80,000 salary excluding super has $14,520 income tax and $1,600 Medicare levy. With a sufficient HELP balance, the calculated repayment is $1,570.80, leaving $62,309.20 annually before excluded items such as Medicare levy surcharge. Rules were checked on 6 November 2026. Later legislation can change annual thresholds, including retrospectively.
Questions and assumptions
Who is this calculator for?
This estimate covers full-year Australian tax residents aged 18 or over, with salary income only and no dependants. It applies the ordinary individual Medicare levy reduction and LITO. It excludes Medicare levy surcharge, seniors and pensioners offsets, family reductions, exemptions, salary sacrifice, other deductions, reportable fringe benefits and other income. It is general information, not personalised financial advice.
Annual estimates and payslips
Weekly, fortnightly and monthly results divide the annual estimate by 52, 26 and 12. Payroll uses separate withholding tables and rounding, so your payslip can differ. Hourly conversion assumes the entered paid hours every week for 52 weeks. Bonuses, irregular shifts and award entitlements need separate treatment.
Super inside or outside a package
For an $89,600 package including 12% super, salary is $80,000 and employer super is $9,600. An $80,000 salary with 12% super paid on top gives the same package. This tool uses the contractual rate you enter across all salary, without statutory maximum contribution-base caps. It does not check minimum employer obligations.
Study loans and low income reductions
Optional HELP repayments use the marginal repayment formula for the selected year and are capped at an entered repayable debt balance. Salary is assumed to be your entire repayment income. Other income-test adjustments are excluded. LITO reduces income tax only and cannot create a refund. The Medicare levy phases in above the current legislated individual threshold of $28,011.
