How to use this tool

1. Paste numbers separated by commas, whitespace, semicolons or new lines. Commas separate values; do not use them as thousands separators or decimal marks.

2. Select Calculate to compare the mean, median, most-frequent repeated values, range and totals. Every entry has equal weight.

3. Copy or print the results. The source list is omitted from exports, and editing the input clears the previous result.

What each result means

The arithmetic mean is sum divided by count. The median is the central sorted value, or the mean of the two central values for an even count. The mode lists the most-frequent repeated values. Range is maximum minus minimum.

Worked example

For 4, 8, 8, 10 and 15, the sum is 45 and the count is 5, giving a mean of 9. The median and mode are both 8. The minimum is 4, maximum 15 and range 11.

Questions and assumptions

Multiple modes and repeated values

If every value occurs once, the result says there is no mode. Otherwise every value tied for the highest frequency is listed, including all values if each repeats equally often. Equivalent decimal spellings, such as 1 and 1.0, count as the same value.

Input and precision

Use 1–1,000 numbers, each between -1 billion and 1 billion with up to six decimal places. Scientific notation, currency signs and missing-value labels are not accepted. Values are accumulated at the accepted fixed decimal precision; displayed statistics are rounded to at most 12 significant digits.

Choosing a useful average

Large outliers can move the mean much more than the median. This calculator reports descriptive statistics only: it does not weight values, remove outliers or determine whether a sample represents a population.
