How to use this tool

1. Enter each job's gross pay excluding employer super. Choose the pay frequency for each job, or use annual totals for irregular or part-year work.

2. Choose the financial year and whether you have a study loan. Optionally enter the full-year tax and HELP withholding expected across both jobs.

3. Calculate to see the second job's extra take-home pay, tax on both incomes together and any estimated withholding gap. Save a report to keep the comparison.

Does a second job have a higher tax rate?

There is no special tax rate for a second job. Final income tax is calculated on combined taxable income. Generally, you claim the tax-free threshold from one employer. Withholding from individual jobs can differ from the final combined liability. This tool does not change or advise on your employer declarations.

Worked example

For 2026–27, adding a $20,000 second job to an $80,000 main-job salary adds $13,600 take-home pay after income tax and ordinary Medicare levy if you have no HELP debt. With enough HELP debt, the additional repayment is $3,000, leaving $10,600 extra annually. Medicare levy surcharge and other excluded items can change the result.

Questions and assumptions

Full-year and part-year work

Weekly, fortnightly and monthly inputs assume the same earnings for 52 weeks, 26 fortnights or 12 months. For a part-year or irregular job, choose Annually and enter the total you expect to earn from that job during the selected financial year. Enter cash wages excluding employer super.

Why compare withholding?

Employers may not know your other earnings. Optionally enter the total you expect both employers to withhold across the entire financial year, including HELP withholding. We compare it with combined estimated income tax, Medicare and study loan repayments. This is a limited estimate, not a tax-return calculation or a refund promise.

Scope and assumptions

For full-year Australian resident adults with salary-only income, no dependants and ordinary Medicare eligibility. Includes LITO and optional HELP using salary as repayment income. Excludes Medicare levy surcharge, family reductions, seniors and pensioners offsets, deductions, fringe benefits, other income and other repayment-income adjustments. Any entered loan balance caps the combined repayment once. General information, not personalised financial advice. Current legislated rules were checked on 6 November 2026.
